Correct Water Piping in Chiller Systems

A chiller’s cooling output reaches the process through water pipework. Insufficient flow, unsuitable pipe sizes or uncontrolled distribution can prevent loads from receiving the cooling they need even when unit capacity is adequate. Pipework is therefore a core part of system design, not merely a set of connections added afterwards.

Pipe Sizing and Pump Selection

Pipe size is determined from design flow, suitable velocity, pressure loss and installation conditions. Bends, valves, filters and load heat exchangers add losses alongside pipe length. A pump should not be selected solely from the chiller connection diameter or motor power.

In a closed loop, pump head for continuous circulation primarily overcomes circuit losses. Building height must separately inform filling pressure, expansion arrangements and component pressure limits. Systems with open tanks can have different static-head requirements.

Flow Protection and Hydraulic Balancing

Check minimum and maximum evaporator flow in product documentation. A flow switch provides protection; it does not replace accurate flow measurement or hydraulic balancing. Balancing load branches helps prevent nearby circuits taking excessive flow while remote ones are starved.

In variable-flow systems, closing load valves must not compromise required unit flow. Bypass arrangements or hydraulic separation need project-specific design. An uncontrolled bypass on every system can mix return water and cause unwanted temperature or efficiency issues.

Filtration, Expansion and Insulation

Plan suitable strainers, air separation or venting points, drains and isolation valves with maintenance access. Expansion and pressure protection depend on system volume, temperatures and design pressure. Pipe weight and vibration must not be transferred to equipment connections.

Maintain vapour-barrier continuity in insulation to prevent condensation on cold surfaces. Where freezing is possible, follow the manufacturer’s recommended protection method. Glycol concentration must account for required freeze protection, material compatibility and thermal and hydraulic properties.

Cleaning and Commissioning

Clean pipework after installation and protect equipment heat exchangers during flushing according to manufacturer instructions. Verify water quality and filtration. After air removal, confirm design flows, differential pressures, temperatures and protective functions.

CEMS Chiller can help assess the piping diagram, pipe lengths, load flow requirements and pump duty point. Commissioning records provide a reference for identifying performance changes during later maintenance.

This article provides general information. Product selection and operating limits must be based on the relevant model’s technical documentation and project-specific calculations.
