F.A.Q

Quick answers about chiller selection, installation and operation.

What is a chiller and where is it used?

A chiller uses a refrigeration cycle to remove heat from water or a suitable heat-transfer fluid, providing controlled cooling. It can serve industrial processes or building HVAC systems. The required fluid temperature and cooling load determine the appropriate selection.

Which CEMS Chiller series should I choose?

Rated capacity alone is not enough to select a series. Required process temperature, operating hours, ambient conditions, installation space and redundancy requirements must be considered together. Explore the product groups on our Chiller Series page and contact our team for an application-specific selection.

How is the required cooling capacity determined?

The cooling load is calculated from fluid flow, inlet and outlet temperatures, fluid properties and equipment operating simultaneously. Actual chiller capacity depends on operating conditions, so units should be compared at the same fluid temperatures and ambient conditions. Future expansion and redundancy requirements should also be assessed during design.

What is the difference between air-cooled and water-cooled chillers?

An air-cooled chiller rejects condenser heat to outdoor air. A water-cooled chiller transfers this heat to a separate condenser-water circuit, typically served by a cooling tower or another suitable heat-rejection system. Selection should consider the site infrastructure, water management and total operating costs.

Does the chiller circuit need glycol?

The need for glycol depends on the target fluid temperature and the lowest ambient temperature the circuit may experience. One concentration is not suitable for every system. Glycol type and concentration must be selected with freeze protection, fluid properties, pump selection and equipment limits in mind, following the unit’s instructions.

What should be prepared before installation?

Plan the installation location, airflow and service clearances together with the electrical supply, water piping, filtration and insulation. The pump and pipework must provide the flow required by the unit under the intended operating conditions. Confirm site-specific and model-specific requirements with the technical team before installation.

How often should a chiller be serviced?

Service intervals depend on the model, operating hours, environment and water quality. Filters, heat-transfer surfaces, fluid quality and operating readings should be checked according to the unit’s maintenance schedule. Follow the equipment’s operating instructions and consult the service team to establish a suitable maintenance programme.

What information should I provide to request a quotation?

Please share the application, required cooling capacity if known, target water inlet and outlet temperatures, flow rate and installation location. Operating hours, fluid type and details of existing pipework also help with the assessment. If the capacity is not known, send your process information so that our team can assess the requirement.
